My #1 hack for 'fueling up' on a road trip

From Our Kitchen

One of my favourite travel food tips has nothing to do with packing a cooler.

It has to do with where you stop.

If you're on the road and didn't pack enough food, it's easy to assume your only options are a drive-through or a gas station. But grocery stores have changed so much over the years, especially their deli sections.

Today, you'll often find fresh sandwiches, wraps, salads, rotisserie chicken, cut vegetables, fruit, hummus, yogurt, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, and other ready-to-eat foods that make putting together a nourishing meal surprisingly easy.

The goal isn't to create the perfect meal. It's simply to choose foods that help you feel energized so you can get back to enjoying your day.

Sometimes a grocery store stop gives you more variety, more fresh options, and often better value than grabbing fast food.

This Week's Simple Step

The next time you're travelling and need to stop for food, challenge yourself to walk into a grocery store instead of the drive-through.

See what you can put together from the deli, produce, and dairy sections.

You might be surprised by how many good options you find.

Warmly,

From Our Kitchen Embracing the Season & Eating Outside When we're travelling, camping, or spending the day at the lake, recipes aren't usually what we need. We need ideas that are flexible enough to work with whatever we've packed, picked up at the grocery store, or have left in the cooler. Easy meals that can be enjoyed on a bench along the path with few utensils, carried in a tote or backpack and ready to go with the flow. Summer in Manitoba is short. So let’s eat outside. Enter the Picnic...

From Our Kitchen I think we've all been there. I certainly have multiple times this summer! You've had a full day exploring, swimming, hiking, or driving, and by the time you're thinking about supper, the last thing you want to do is start cooking from scratch. The good news is, convenience doesn't have to mean settling for less. My approach to meals at moments like this is to seek out what will fill me up and truly keep me satisfied. When I have a day on the go, a poor meal may sink me but I...

From Our Kitchen One of my favourite ways to simplify summer meals is to let the fridge do some of the work, and let my mind relax. Meals are made of ingredients on a plate. Having a few ingredients prepared ahead of time doesn't mean planning every meal. It simply means giving yourself a few building blocks that make healthy choices easier. This week, make this simple prep a reality. This is both your grocery list and your prep guide, and all week long you'll open your fridge to find: A...
